IE 6 “position: relative” fix
August 22nd, 2008 Filed Under CSS, Good to know, Technology, Tips & Tricks, browser
I got a big-time fix for IE6 bug which doesn’t behave properly for the position: relative elements.
Problem:
When you give some position:relative style to any element in the page and resize the browser, it behaves as if that element had a position: fixed assigned.
The Fix:
Simply add position: relative to your body tag and make that your habit to have it in the first place whenever you start a new css sheet.
Hope that helps people getting frustrated with this problem.
Enjoy Madi !!

Amazon’s Reading Device called “Kindle”
May 17th, 2008 Filed Under Good to know, Technology, utilities
Amazon has come up with a new concept of reading books or paper; Probably sometime I was dreaming of such device. This device is a real-time book library for anybody who loves to read on a screen instead of paper.

This is a wireless device which doesn’t need any synchronizations through your computer. It connects to the amazon stores wirelessly and downloads any book you purchase. And you can do all at any place where EVDO, networks is available. This kind of network is generally used by cell phones for high-speed data transfers.
Not only books, but you can also read news papers published in the US everyday.
They have a collection of 120000 books currently and the numbers are growing every day. You can also download any book’s preview chapters before you make mind to purchase.
I think this is a great thing to have specially for the reading freaks like me.
If Google search can be integrated with the device which searches text across all the books in amazons gamut, it would be great. For more information on Kindle follow this link

On demand javascript “an AJAX alternative”
April 28th, 2008 Filed Under Good to know, Javascript, Technology, Tips & Tricks, json
AJAX … sounds to be very sophisticated, powerful buzzword for last 3 years which helps in data transfers done without reloading the web page.
But if we really think, we hardly use the ‘X’ part of AJAX; Meaning we do not pull xml data from the server but we generally pull some JSON data or strings and then process them and manipulate the displays.
If you think we don’t use the ‘A’ part of it too most of the times. I mean the Asynchronous part.
So what we use AJAX is for downloading some strings without refreshing the page.
If that is all what we need, then we can opt for a simpler solution called “On-demand-javascript”.
It is very simple to understand.
Create a script block with a src set to some server side dynamic entity(.asp, .jsp, servlet, .php etc) which in turn will send some JSON data in turn. For example:
<script type="text/javascript" id="dataBus" src="/myServlet.do?action=init"></script>
The above script node may establish a connection with the browser and set a session cookie.
Depending upon some event on the page, we can use the dataBus to pull some data from the server for us(it will just work like a pipe for us):
document.getElementById('dataBus').src="/myServlet.do?action=transfer&type=address&dateTime=utf-6556554351516";
The above code may pull some JSON data for us and once it is loaded our subsequent javascript code can use the received data.
The features/benefit of this approach would be:
- No cross domain constraints.
- Synchronous delegation.
- Already evaluated JSON data.
- You need to just place your data and don’t break your head in making-up a valid javascript object even if it is a string.
There can be a well lot of patterns for using the transported data and making data delivery secure around this approach.
But I am not telling you to forget AJAX. Because when you need to send some information using post method to your own server, this trick will not help you.
So the next time when you plan for some AJAX data pull, just consider this approach as an option and compare which one is worth for you.

Voice based search in Hyderabad
April 25th, 2008 Filed Under Good to know, Technology, comparisons, gyan
Google has launched yet another great utility; The phone based search in Hyderabad for local searches about movies, restaurants and other petty/large businesses.
This is the way it works: You call 180041999999 and ask about a Chinese restaurant and then ask google to forward your call to that restaurant to book a table for you.
But this service is not very much different from justdial service already there in all the major cities of India.

Binaural Brain Waves - the digital drug
March 12th, 2008 Filed Under Spirituals, Technology, gyan
I know this is not the place where I should publish my non-technical gyan. But this is a bit technical too.
Day before yesterday, I was reading through a column in my local newspaper and I came across a phrase called “Digital Drugs”. I immediately googled it, and found an altogether different context of digital drugs - The Binaural Brainwave Beats.
The theory revolves around the theory of EEG(Electroencephalography).
EEG is used to measure brain’s electrical vibrations from the surface of your head. It contains frequency patterns below 30Hz.
They are categorized into four states:
| State | Frequency range | State of mind |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | 0.5Hz - 4Hz | Deep sleep |
| Theta | 4Hz - 8Hz | Drowsiness (also first stage of sleep) |
| Alpha | 8Hz - 14Hz | Relaxed but alert |
| Beta | 14Hz - 30Hz | Highly alert and focused |
All of the frequencies are almost present in all of the mind states listed above. But the dominant frequency is considered to be the actual state of mind.
Commanding your Brain to enter in a desired state:
If you are found to be in Highly alert and focused state(14Hz - 30Hz or Beta state), it is possible to bring you down to the Alpha state by applying a 10Hz frequency as an external stimulus. The effect will relax you.
So how does the stimulus work is the next question came to my mind.
For example if you need to have a stimulus of some frequency for your brain, you need to be fed by that frequency, and it can be absorb by your mind from different sources. Ear is one of the very easily available source and directly does the work. To feed the frequency they use binaural beats technique. This technique feeds two different frequencies from both the channels in a stereo headphone, and does the following to generate a 10Hz stimulus:
Send a 500Hz tone from right channel and send a 510Hz tone from the left channel. The difference is what affects your brain state.
When I read about this, I was just thinking that it is some fooling around business. But actually after using it I felt the difference. I got a deep sound sleep and woke fresh in the morning by using it for 30 minutes in the night.
Although today is my 3rd day, but I can feel the difference.
For this there is a software called BrainWave Generator which can be downloaded from http://www.bwgen.com/download.htm and can be used for the following purposes:
- Increasing Concentration
- Meditation
- Relaxation
- Self-hypnosis
- Insomnia
- Increasing Creativity
Infact, in the Hindu Vedic Theories there is a theory of “Naad” - the sound waves. In the “Saam Veda” it was believed that each and every Naad generated in this universe has some or the other effect on the human mind.
And hence, “Saam Veda” teaches the performing art including chanting, music, songs and dance for the application of theory. The Indic Classical Music(Hindustani and Carnatic style) are the extension to the threads of “Saam Veda”.
Some of you might have also heard about the music therapy in India, where different types of percussions and sounds are generated to have effect on the brain and hence achieve a desired state of mind.
The theory also says that by controlling the state of the mind, we can have control over all kinds of mental illness.
Insomnia, Lack of concentration etc is nothing but the illness of our minds.
So, let yourself give a try to this.
Also in some of the forums, I read that some people felt uneasy after taking the dosage of the therapy. It may be correct. So if you try and feel that its not your cup of tea, then immediately stop using the therapy. Some people are too sensitive to sustain the change in mental state.
But for an exiting experiment you can give it a try.
Note:
- For effective results, be in an isolated place while taking the therapy.
- Minors are strictly advised to take guidance of their parents or Adults.
- You don’t have to listen to these frequencies at a high volume.
- For more information on the theory, you can visit http://www.bwgen.com/
